Words in English are sometimes made from two nouns. (1)
We can make many new words in English by joining two words together. (2)

الكلمات في اللغة الانجليزية أحياناً مُكون من كلمتين.

يمكننا أن تكوين العديد من الكلمات من خلال ضم أو دمج كلمتين معاً.

There are three types of compound words:

يوجد ثلاث أنوع للكلمات المركبة: 

1- Single words (Closed): 

كلمات مُفردة والتي تُسمى (Closed) "الكلمات المركبة المُغلقة" لأنه مُقربة ببعضها البعض ولا توجد مسافة بين الكلمة والكلمة.

أمثلة:

Airbag, sunroof, sunlight.

Air + bag ➝   Airbag

Sun + roof ➝   Sunroof

Sun + light ➝   Sunlight

Note: Sometimes knowing when to write compound as single words.(3)

2- Separate words (Open): 

كلمات مُنفصلة وتُسمى (Open)  "الكلمات المركبة المفتوحة" لوجود مساحة (مفتوحة) بين الكلمة والكلمة.

أمثلة:

Disc brakes, swimming pool, car park, video game, litter bin.

 Note: Separate  words (open) is difficult. That's because some compound words change their type  based on their function in a particular sentence.

For example:

I bought a new video game. 

(video game) Here it is a noun.

However, if we talk about a built-in video game player, the word video game are acting as an adjective.

مُلاحظة: الكلمات المنفصلة صعبة، ذلك لأن الكلمات المركبة يتغير نوعها حسب وظيفتها في الجملة.

I bought a new video game. 

في المثال السابق (video game) يُعتبر اسم

وإذا تحدثنا عن مُدمج ألعاب الفيديو، فإن كلمة  (video game) هُنا تعمل كصِفة.

3- Hyphenated words (Hyphenated): 

3- الكلمات المركبة الموصولة: وهي عبارة عن كلمتين بينهُما أداة واصلة (-) تصل بينهُما.

أمثلة:

Insect-proof, air-conditioning. ice-cream.

Insect + - + proof ➝  Insect-proof

air + - + conditioning ➝ air-conditioning

ice + - + cream ➝ ice-cream.
